Although the corps will spend the first portion of the summer in a relatively stable and controlled environment, the days leading up to their arrival in Indianapolis pose unique challenges. Skyrocketing costs and a mobile economy has eroded local support for these community-based groups, corps directors said.

DCI corps are independent groups, Drum Corps Videos and they compete over the summer. Later, the members gather monthly or bimonthly to work in preparation for the summer. The DCI videos are produced by professionals who primarily work for the major broadcast and cable television networks. Marketed as “Marching Music's Major League,” Drum Corps International is an offshoot of community bugle, drum and flag groups that sprung up across North America in the wake of World War I. But staid military drill has given way to fast-paced, whiplash moves and physical demands equivalent more to a college gymnastics team than a chamber music program. As Marching Music's Major League™, DCI continues a tradition of exceptionally high-quality performance ensembles, with membership in the top corps highly sought-after and extremely competitive.“We are proud to continue our longstanding 17-year partnership with DCI,” Fathom Events CEO Ray Nutt said. Fans fear this may be the last championship of its kind as the top seven groups – who have dubbed themselves the 'G-7' – threaten to break away and form their own touring circuit. In the wake of the economic crisis, the G-7 want a new touring schedule in 2011 that will concentrate the top acts at shows in a bid to draw new fans and increase revenue for these corps.

A powerful group of players known as the 'G-7' has sparked tumult amid accusations of a hostile takeover attempt. Indianapolis-based Drum Corps International is investigating whether its staff knew of allegations of sexual misconduct made against the prominent director of a well-known group in Pennsylvania. The organization is conducting an internal review to learn whether any employees knew of the allegations but failed to report them. Through his attorney, he denied some of the allegations and denied “any nonconsensual relationships” with others. On Thursday, the Philadelphia Inquirer and Daily News published a sweeping report containing allegations of lewd comments, groping and rape against George Hopkins. Megh Toth, working as one of Hopkins' staff, told the newspaper she traveled with him in 2006 to an annual drum corps meeting in the city. Based on that description, one other thing comes to mind: Marching Band. Others may delay the start of their touring, marching only a short season on the way to the DCI Championships. For those who don’t understand, the use of electronics in marching shows usually refers to amplification, electronic sounds, and pre-recorded show elements.
